You are viewing 20 entries, 20 into the past March 7th, 200903:59 pm: Dear Brain,
You are able to get away with not wearing padded bike shorts/pants at the gym because the seats of the indoor bikes they have are the equivalent of La-Z-Boy recliners. The same can not be said of the seat to your outdoor road bike. Which, in comparison, is the equivalent of a very small-headed sewing pin. Thus, making what was supposed to be a nice easy 1-hour outdoor ride equivalent to an hour alone with a bite-happy chihuahua. Do this again, and I may have to file a formal complaint. Now, go walk your dog and wait to sit down for at least two more hours. No love, Your Derriere
March 6th, 200904:01 pm: It's Friday!!
See my subject line? That, my dear friends-listers, is the most amazing and awesome news you will ever hear!* It is now *checks watch* 4:05 in the afternoon, that means that I have 55 minutes left in the work day!** And I've already finished my important work for the day! A whole hour early! So far, this week has ranged from blistering cold and completely snow covered on Monday to ridiculously warm (it's 60F right now, what the happy hell?) If that isn't time and the Earth herself showing preferences for Friday's over Monday's, then I don't know what is.*** Yesterday, I left work a bit early^ and I took my MIL in for a spa day. She got a "body bronze" which consisted of a whole bunch of stuff that required her to get naked under a sheet on a table for a woman she'd never met before,^^ while I got a facial. It was wonderful. It's been a year since I had one done, and I really ought to try and save up to go more often. The neck and shoulder massage that went with it went a LONG way to clearing up my headache. Guess it was partially tension induced, huh? This morning was year 2 of "Read Across America - Dr. Seuss Day" at a local (SW Philly) school. This year I read "The Lorax" to a group of somewhat disinterested fifth graders. But, they were polite, and that's a really important thing. Immediately after work tonight I'm heading up to PCOM for an Open House meeting. After that let's out, Magus and I will be heading over to my brother's for our weekly viewing of "Dollhouse" and BSG. AS always, there is a chance that Rock Band will commence if we are feeling rock-bandy. Have I mentioned that I'm alone in my office today? Everyone else is somewhere else!^^^ SO the music is up nice and loud, and the lights are turned off, and the fish are being fishy. It's really a very pleasant atmosphere. But I still can't wait to leave ;-P *No, I don't care if that is a bald faced lie. Hyperbole's rock! **Yes, I am highly proud of the fact that I can do basic math and tell time so well. Shut up. ***Any empirical evidence you have supporting my conclusion is greatly appreciated. Evidence to the contrary will be greeted with sporks to the eye. You have been warned.
^Mild lies may have accompanied this move. ^^She made another appointment for next month. ;-P ^^^And no, I am not jealous of the co-worker on his way to Spain, or the other co-worker on his way to a weekend music festival. Really.
March 4th, 200902:15 pm: Headacheville
My immune system is made of fail. I've had a pretty much constant, although occasionally subtle, headache since Thursday last week. This has been interspersed with semi-regular bouts of mild fever and swollen/sore throat. Headache meds do very little to stem the symptoms. I've had a LOT of orange juice over the last week. I've also slept a lot. I got nearly 11 hours Friday night, and then at least 8-9 hours on Saturday and Sunday nights. And somewhere in the realm of 7-8 hours the rest of the nights. (Please note, this much sleep is not standard practice for me AT ALL.) Monday I worked from home, on account of the snow that descended upon us all, so I got to take it pretty easy, but still no relief. This morning was the first time I've woken up without a headache in the last week, but that self-corrected at about 10:30 this morning. I'm refusing to take any more headache meds, as they aren't doing shit, and my liver has requested a break. (Seriously there were bike messengers, and notarized memos involved. It got ugly.) I know my body, so I know that this isn't anything serious (I get this way in the winter sometimes), and its nothing that is going to make me go to the Doctors (yet), because there is very little that they could do. But it is still damned annoying, and its stopping me from being able to do my regular things. (Like "training" - I did a mild core set this morning, shoveled snow from the sidewalk on Monday, and went ice skating with the kiddies on Saturday. Beyond that, my "training" has consisted of a combination of Rock Band 2/Fable II/Assassin's Creed.) I picked up some "Emergen-C" and cough drops this morning. I chose the flavor poorly in both cases. Blech. And to make this post made up of NOT entirely whine, I'll give you TV in one-long run on sentence! "Battlestar Galactica" is still awesome (even if its making me a tad nervous now); "House" is the worse show that I watch (seriously guys, I get that you are a procedural show, but would it hurt you to break out of the mold just a little?); "Dollhouse" has yet to really reel me in, although its not bad, its just not GREAT; and I still miss you SPN! Come back!!
February 20th, 200903:35 pm: Make your own album cover meme
It's Friday afternoon, and I needed a pick me up. So might you! 1 - Click here. The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band. 2 - Next click here. The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album. 3 - Then, click here. Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover. 4 - Lastly, use the photo software of your choice to put it all together!! I made three :-D ( Forgive mine folks, I'm at work, and therefore am currently limited to MS Paint! )
February 11th, 200910:37 am: ZOMG HILARIOUS!
This was posted over at battlestar_blog today (and snagged from Slackerz. If you like BSG, you MUST click the cut below (no spoilers). Random-yet-related mini-pic-spam of Rose Tyler & River Tam included as well, for those of you not all about the BSG. To paraphrase: ALL MUST CLICK! ( Read more... )This made my morning so much brighter :-) Semi-related, I'm enjoying "Fable II" TOO much. Which resulted in my getting very little sleep last night. Or the night before. But my Fable dog? He has been named "Sammy" after that great big ol' puppy dog ( Sam Winchester )Initially, the virtual dog was a bit brown in color, and great at sniffing out treasure. Hence the name "Sammy." But, as I'm getting more good/pure then neutral now, my dog's hair color is turning a bit blond. Plus, he is totally a 3-star fighter, so, I think he shall have to renamed Dean-o soon, after that other lovely ( Winchester boy )And COMPLETELY unrelated (what was the original point of this post?), here is a random picture of... ( Click at Risk of OMGCUTE! )And no, I'm no longer on Dayquil. Though I admit that it is possible that there are some lasting side effects. *twitches*
February 9th, 200909:23 am: Sicky Day
Spent this weekend in an annoying state of illness. Kind of a cold, kind of the flu. Freakin' annoying all the way around. So, I'm taking a sick day today (although, I AM going to be putting in at least a couple of hours of work via the internet, as things that I thought were completely taken care of need a bit more babysitting from me then originally planned. *shrug* What can you do? I muscled through the early stages of the illness Saturday morning to help paint my soon-to-be-born nephew's bedroom. Then I pretty much slept for the rest of the day and night. Well, aside form the part where I watched the first two episodes of Season 5 of "Lost" and the remaining episodes of The Guild, which Magus and I started watching Friday night at my brother's, post BSG. It's written by, and stars Felicia Day, so even though we don't play World of Warcraft (and therefore don't get all of the jokes), we still found it to be highly entertaining. Each webisode is about 5 minutes long, so it's not a lot of commitment, if you want to give it a go. Speaking of BSG. I have been woefully negligent in doing write-ups since the season restarted. And I don't have the energy to do full write ups now. So let me encapsulate all of my thoughts on the past four episodes thusly: ( Read more... ) So, there you go. I should talk about SPN at some point, but that point is not now. Perhaps I will merely summarize with: I love my boys, and I love my show. And there is nothing that makes me quite so happy as curling up with Magus on Saturday, and watching the SPN download. They've been doing an excellent job lately of creating self-contained episodes that STILL manage to push the overall-arc forward. Good job SPN! And lastly, Magus and I got our taxes done. *sigh* And while we at least don't OWE this year, the return that we are getting (to be deposited in our account this week) was so piddly that we (re: I, but with Magus' permission) decided to pretty much blow it all. ( We are stimulating the economy, damn it! PLUS, I think we earned the right to treat ourselves after the moron with the crowbar broke into our car. Did I mention that he/she/it ALSO bypassed a pair of $100 sunglasses in favor of a SUNGLASS CLEANING KIT ($9.95, VERY used)? No? Well, he/she/it did. Moron.) So, thanks in large part to my new found obsession with "Rock Band" and my desperate urge to get to play "Fable II" we decided to spend the chunk of the return NOT being mailed to NJ (as we got out of owing the Feds money, but not the State) on an XBox 360, Rock Band, & (to be bought later today most likely), Fable II. I don't have the XBox Live account set up yet, but will do shortly, I should think. Need to work out what I'm going to do with our internet situation first...
February 1st, 200907:33 pm: A letter
Dear Person Who Broke Into Our Car While It Was Parked At The Corner of 13th & Kenyon in NW DC Saturday Night, First off, allow me to thank you for being a moron, and opting to leave virtually everything in the car alone. I realize that we did not leave you many options for things to thieve, and your choices were limited, but still, you left behind most of the things that we would consider valuable, and for that we owe you our thanks. Afterall, you COULD have stolen my 2 GB mp3 player with the viewscreen (valued new at $65), but instead you opted to take the 1 GB mp3 player (Magus') WITHOUT the viewscreen (valued new at $35). It was over 1.5 years old, and due to be replaced anyway. Was it merely the fact that the 2 GB player had a dead battery that deterred you? I have to assume so, since you took it out of its hidey-hole and left it on the driver seat for me the way that you did. *shrug* Taking the 3 ft long auxiliary jack cable (valued new at $12.95) was a tad more annoying, though, as we had to suffer with just radio airplay and CDs to listen to on the way home. But, as this was only possible because you opted to leave both the stereo (factory) in place AND all of our CDs (approximately 12, heavily used ones), I guess I really shouldn't complain. It also makes sense that you opted to steal the (almost entirely) empty messenger bag that Magus so loved (valued new at $15) over his Nike Gym Bag (valued new at $20), seeing as how the gym bag was filled with his sweaty gym clothes. Who would want to steal THAT after all? And really, that messenger bag WAS quite cute (it took Magus nearly two years to find one that he liked that much. Glad that we could do the leg work for you on that). On a similar note, I'd like to thank you for leaving behind my running shoes (valued new at $100), as they are the only thing I have ever won, and I would have been perturbed to have lost them in such a fashion. Lastly, I would like to thank you for opting to break the BACK door window, rather then the front window, as it allowed us to drive home without worrying about sitting on broken glass, as that really would have ruined our day. Admittedly, I'm less thankful that I now have a $220 window replacement bill all so that you could steal approximately $62.95 worth of used goods (so really, they are probably only worth about $40 TOPS) and gain access to approximately 500 MB of mp3's that you probably won't even appreciate (I do so hope that you like "Faith No More"). But hey *shrugs* at least I lucked out, and got a moron to break into my car for the very first time ever, because I think we can all agree that it could have been so much worse if a person in possession of more then 3/10 of a brain cell had decided to go for a joy ride with a crowbar last night (as the amount of broken glass in the general vicinity of my car's parking spot would indicate), right? Signed, Your Overall (Mostly - But Not Really) Thankful Car Owning Victim P.S. I hope you got glass imbedded in your limb or other important body part. Like, say, perhaps, your ass - as the image of you slipping and falling and cutting your rear end on the broken shards of my car window fills me with endless amounts of glee. (I've never claimed to be THAT good of a person). Cheers!
January 29th, 200909:11 am: *pokes head out*
*waves* Been a while, huh? How's everyone doing? Well, I hope. I really haven't had much a chance to peruse my flist of late. Just the occasional jump in and jump out kind of a deal, so if there is anything important that I've missed (or just something fun), please feel free to let me know. I feel very out of the loop right now. Things happening in my neck of the woods: Magus' step-father (sorta) was hospitalized last week for severe abdominal pain and nausea. Seriously scary stuff that ended up with him being intubated for a day following three consecutive heart attacks. We actually spent the early hours of last Friday morning at the hospital waiting as a result. He is doing MUCH better now (he was actually discharged yesterday), although no diagnosis has been given. Really kicking 2009 off with a bang, aren't we? The class that I was planning to take this semester is full, and so-far, I've had zero luck with getting the Dean to let me into the class, on account of limited lab desk space. What does this mean? Well, if I can't convince her before Monday's class to let me in, then I'm SOL for the semester, and will instead be taking the super-condensed version of the class over the summer. That class will take place over the course of 5 weeks, four nights a week, from 6pm until 10:10pm. Needless to say, it will be hell, and will f-up my training schedule like MAD. Nothing to be done however, as I need to take the class. *sigh* Speaking of training, this month I have started working with Magus (or the other way around really) on a strength training program. I'm pushing the endurance (running/cycling/swimming) to the back burner (still doing it, just at a lesser volume), in favor of the strength training as my muscles need some serious toning that I'm just not going to be able to get any other way at this juncture. My plan is to spend these first 6 months of 2009 really focusing on the strength aspect of training. This will allow me to start upping my volume for the endurance stuff in the early weeks of June (just before that pesky class starts at the end of that month). I hope that I can keep training in the mornings before I go to work, but exhaustion may win out. Theoretically, I will still do my season-opener tri the first weekend of June, as its a short-one, and shouldn't be too effected by my lower training volumes I should think. All other races are up in the air at this point though. Do I want to do more? Yes. I just have nothing settled in concrete right now. In other friendly and familial news, Magus and I have been playing a LOT of Rock Band - as both my brother and one of our close friends got it this past holiday. Which basically means playing Friday night (after BSG) and then either Saturday or Sunday afternoon (with the exception of this past weekend, in which we played Friday night, Saturday afternoon, AND Sunday afternoon.) Shit is ADDICTIVE man. To the point that I keep wiffle-waffling on whether or not buying and X-Box 360 for pretty much the sole purpose of playing Rock Band at my own house is ridiculous or not... My decision is still up in the air, and will probably stay there until after we know how our taxes are going to work out this year ;-P Magus and I will be in DC this weekend (and invading emmmitt's and page5grrl's abode.) This is awesome, as we haven't been down to DC in MONTHS (mostly because we ended up canceling our last two planned trips at the last minute *sigh* we suck). This is cause for much celebration. *throws confetti* Thinky thoughts on the first two episodes of the second half of the last season of BSG, thoughts on last week's SPN, and the Doctor Who Christmas Special (and possibly Dexter S3) will be coming in a post sometime later today. Probably. Stay tuned ;-P
January 20th, 200911:53 am: To commemerate
My co-workers and I are all huddled around a little 13-inch television screen, with rabbit ears and a shaky image, eating lunch, and making snarky comments about the lack of separation of church and state and Aretha Franklin's hat. It is awesome. THIS is awesome.
January 16th, 200912:37 pm: The Boys are Back in Town
So, Supernatural aired last night, resulting in Magus and I making a pilgrimage to his Mom's in order to watch it (after the month long hiatus, neither one of us were willing to wait an entire DAY for the download, so we had to go somewhere and watch it live ;-P). We will be doing something similiar tonight, only replace "SPN" with "BSG" and repalce "one month" with "FRAKING FOREVER" and replace "his Mom's" with "my brother's" (sorry emmmitt, but there is just no way we can make it down to DC tonight *sigh*). But anyway, back to the show! ( Brief thoughts on SPN 4x11 - Family Remains )
January 14th, 200901:56 pm: GAHHH!
If I just got spoiled for who the final Cylon is I am going to be PISSED!!!! ETA: Phew! *wipes brow* sounds like it was just speculation someone was trying to pass of as factual thanks to those silly EBAY'd scripts. But still. If the person they thought was the final one, turns out to be the final one? There will be steam coming out of my ears. Trufax.
January 9th, 200903:13 pm: The walls are closing in on me!!!
Whose idea was it to make Friday part of the regular work week anyway? Hmm? Who ever it was, it was a downright stupid idea. Please refrain from having anymore of them in the future, as clearly your brain is a danger to society. In fact, you should probably just hang out in the corner and just look pretty from now on, okay? Now Thursdays, THURSDAYS are an altogether wonderful day to end the work-week on, wouldn't you agree? *leaves for a happier place* You know if we all rebel at once, THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO STOP US!!! WHO'S WITH ME?!? *cricket* *sigh* Fine *kicks dirt* be that way then, *pouts* I thought it was an idea with merit at least... Life is...happening. Rock Band was played over the holidays, and now I want to drum ALL THE TIME. Alas, we do not own anything that could even remotely come close to playing such a game, and have no desire (or money) to rectify that. So I feel like I've been going through withdrawal ALL WEEK. This past weekend, just as I was finally getting over my holiday illnesses, Magus and his family decided to go ahead and contract The Plague. Which has been attempting to infect me ever since. But I have been steadfastly warding it off with vitamin C, hot tea, and sticking my fingers in my ears and yelling "I CAN'T HEAR YOU" at the top of my lungs (which, given that I am getting over a bout of laryngitis, is not all that loud, really). I've been taking the melatonin nightly before bed, and I think that it IS helping. Albeit just a tiny bit. It helps me fall asleep more easily, and I wake up without feeling groggy, like I do when I take something like NyQuil. What it doesn't do is stop me from waking up throughout the night. I'm okay with this. Magus and I power watched Lost Season 4 over the weekend. And ( Cut for brief S4 thoughts )And with that, I actually have to go WORK. Gah. Who do these people think they are, I mean honestly? *grumbles* Also, sorry for the seeming random, and out-of-place posts. They were sitting in queue...

December 30th, 200810:10 am: When Google Headlines Fail
I apparently depend too much on my iGoogle to let me know when shit is going down, which is why I'm just finding out about the massive sludge spill in Tennessee that happened last week, right now. *boggles* ...sludge, a byproduct of the ash from coal combustion, was contained at a retention site at the Tennessee Valley Authority's power plant in Kingston, about 40 miles east of Knoxville. The retention wall breached early Monday... As of now, they are estimating more then 1 BILLION (with a "B") gallons of sludge has spilled, and at least 300 acres of land has been covered (an area larger then the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill). The ash that was released also contains elevated levels of mercury and arsenic. This is BAD folks. As of now, the chemicals haven't impacted the drinking water supply, but it's only a matter of time before they do. Clean up for a spill of this scale will take anywhere from weeks to months to years. They aren't saying at this point... By comparison, another spill happened eight years ago in eastern Kentucky, where more than 300 million gallons of coal waste into spilled into tributaries; contaminating the water supply for more than 25,000 residents, and killing off all aquatic life in the area. That spill took months to clean up. This spill is estimated to be at least 1.5 times larger. Current Mood: shocked
December 18th, 200811:33 am: SUGAR! AND ODD LINKS!
My office? FLOODED with sugar right now. And boy, oh boy, is it starting to show. There is bad music being played, and a general consensus that we need to take a recess. Also, I'm fairly certain that I did awful on my exam last night *sigh* and the report that I'm working on here at work is kicking my ass. Again. (And no, it's not the same one as before). In honor of that, I present you with random and weird-ass links! 1. Plane hits cow on emergency landing. Yup. You read that right. There is also video of the event. Poor thing. :-( 2. Human-sized heart left at car wash. Not quite the same ring as leaving it in San Francisco, huh? 3. Pepperoni Pizza used to evade thieves.. Taking a cue from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, perhaps? 4. In similar pizza-mugging news: Cops follow snow tracks to nab pizza thieves. And for a final, not so weird link, we have the Death Map! Which is actually a fairly interesting depiction of where in America that dear ol' Mother Nature is most deadly.
December 14th, 200807:31 pm: Mini study break - Neuro Anatomy is silly
The fact that "internodes" are "the relatively large areas of the axon that are wrapped in myelin" and "nodes" are the "small gaps separating adjacent internodes" leads me to believe that anatomists, like chemists, simply delight in naming things in an inexplicable manner simply to confuse the CRAP out of people. I assure you, the only reason I am going to remember the relationship between these two things is the fact that they don't make any logical sense. *shrugs* I guess the reason for my remembering it doesn't matter, so long as I remember, huh? *goes back to the books*

December 2nd, 200811:29 pm: E.O. Wilson Rules!
I am totally a Sociobiology fangirl. It's true. I've mentioned my proclivities towards Sociobiology before, and discussed my interest in one day perusing a Ph.D. on the topic (and no, my choice to become a PA has not altered this eventual goal - it remains in the pipeline). But I don't think that I've ever mentioned E.O. Wilson specifically (although, I feel like its possible that I have, and just didn't tag the post or something *shrugs*). Wilson is a two-time Pulitzer winning author, who is for all intents and purposes, the father of Sociobiology as we know it. The man is 80 years old, and completely brilliant folks. And tonight, I got to see him and his colleague (and two-time co-author; one-time Pulitzer winner) Bert Holldobler give a lecture and participate in a Q&A session and a book signing at the Free Library in Logan Square. It was, to put it mildly, completely AWESOME. I was totally bouncing (in a subdued and controlled way) in my seat when the moderator for the evening gave the introductions. I was completely enraptured during Bert's breakdown of the contents of their newest book ( The Superorganism). And I totally kept my cool when I met Wilson briefly afterwards to have him sign one of his books for me. Then I walked off into the frigid Philly air with a bounce in my step, and honestly not caring about the fact that my commute home took almost and hour and a half, because I had a new book to read! The lecture was fun, and light-hearted, and while the questions from the audience were mostly uninspired, everyone in the auditorium was respectful and obviously interested in the topic. I got lucky, and was at the front for the book signing, but when I left there were at least 100 people waiting behind me. I've always understood the importance of eusocial insects to Sociobiology, but hearing them talk about it, made it quite a bit more interesting (so much obvious passion for a subject does that). They talked about some very specific species of ants (the honeypot ant being one of the most interesting of the evening - colonies of this species will actually raid other, neighboring colonies, and ENSLAVE THE MEMBERS FOLKS!), and also discussed a few insect groups in general, and made some loose (but very interesting) analogies to humans. It was a very enlightening evening, and I only wish that there were more lectures of this type available to go to on a regular basis. Plus: E.O. WILSON!!!! I seriously never anticipated getting to hear him lecture live, so this was truly freaking awesome. Hehe! *fangirls*
